Phil Smith

Phil is one of the top volleyball and beach volleyball players in England, having competed at the highest national and international level for the last 8 years. In this time, he has won National Championships in two different countries, played in European club volleyball competitions and represented Great Britain and England at both volleyball and beach volleyball.  

He was a late starter in volleyball, as his first contact with the sport came at the end of 2007 (aged 21) after he took part in UK Sport's "Sporting Giants" initiative. Over 3,500 people applied for the scheme and, after 6 months of trials, Phil was one of only 4 male athletes to be offered the opportunity to train full time with the Great Britain Beach Development Squad which was based in Bath.  By 2009 and with less than 2 years of training in the sport, Phil was already representing England and Great Britain in international competitions!

His beach volleyball career highlights include:

  • Represented England and Great Britain at over 20 events on the FIVB World Tour, the CEV European Tour and the Northern European Zonal Volleyball Association (NEVZA) Tour since 2009.

    • Reached 4th Round of the FIVB Continental Cup​ (2015)

    • Best CEV finish: 9th place

    • Best FIVB finish: 17th place

  • Volleyball England Beach Tour

    • Winner of 10 events;

    • Reached the semifinals ​or higher in every event he played since 2009;

    • Voted VEBT "Best Blocker" each year the award was given (2009, 2010, 2011 and 2012);

    • VEBT Champions Race winner (2015).

Phil has also won various other accolades and awards, including a Volleyball England TASS Scholarship (2013 & 2014) and the Bournemouth University Sportsman of the Year award (2013).
